Split, Croatia

Croatia was beautiful! We went to Split, Croatia. It was right on the water! Our hostel was very nice as well, even though Darcy and I were in the loft and could barely breathe while we slept. Split is a cute town. It's much smaller than Florence and has a completely different vibe. It has similar shops and restaurants, but the feel of the streets and buildings is completely different. It's all white marble. There are very few cars. Most streets are very narrow like Florence, but I can't even call them streets. Walking from building to building was more like walking on a large marble sidewalk. Buildings were all a beige color.

Seating along the water was really nice. The restaurants were good, but I didn't really take a liking to Croatian food. They eat a lot of meat and fish there - 2 things I'm not a huge fan of. I was missing my panini while I was there.

We went white water rafting on Friday. We had to drive about 1 and a half to get to the rafting spot. The drive was beautiful too. The water is the same color as the Caribbean. Rafting was fun, but the rapids weren't too rough. They were class 3 rapids, so it was more of a scenic ride than a adventurous one. It definitely wasn't an adrenaline rush. That'll be saved for Interlaken this weekend. We all liked our rafting guide Marco. Croatian guys are very very very cute and Marco spoke very good English which I was surprised by. We had lunch at a restaurant near the rafting sight. I had pork chops and fries. Fries seem to be a staple in Croatia. I had friends who only ordered fries while they were in Croatia. Fries came with everything which is very different from Italy. For dessert, we had these doughy powdered sugar balls that tasted like mini funnel cakes.

While churros with chocolate are the famous dessert in Barcelona, these doughy balls (I don't know what they are actually called) are the dessert in Croatia. We would walk along the river at night and people watch. We'd always find a stand selling that dessert and we'd find a bench. It was hot even at night. I thought maybe it would be a little cooler in Croatia, but it wasn't. Luckily, we were in the water most of the weekend.

Saturday was our island hopping boat cruise. We went to various remote islands (not sure the names of all of them). We spent a few hours laying on the beach at one of the islands. The water was so clear! It was like a bath tub. I could see straight to the bottom of the ocean even was I was 50 yards off shore. It was also very shallow so you could walk a long ways in the water and still be able to stand. The water was the perfect temperature and I loved how sandy the ocean floor was. There weren't any rocks, seaweed, shells, etc. I just sat there in the water for three hours since it was so hot to lay on the beach.

Sunday we went to Krka national park on the way home. It was probably my favorite part of the weekend trip. This was the park where all the famous waterfalls are. Once again, it was beautiful and we went swimming! I got some great pictures there. Lunch was amazing too. I had a chicken salad with a lot of tomatoes and thousand island dressing. It was only 65,00 Kuna which is about 9 euros.

The prices in Croatia were great. Saturday night, 8 of us went to a restaurant and we spent a total of 50 euros. That's about $60. We ordered so much too that we were stuffed!

I've really enjoyed these bus2alps trips so far. I've been asking the guides about their jobs and how they got them. There are a lot of applicants, but it's not like you have to be fluent in a language to be a tour guide. You intern for a summer (no pay but housing and trips are included) and then you can officially work there and get paid! One of girls, Tiernan, has been on the Croatia, Cinque Terre, and Siena trips with me. She happens to be fluent in Italian. She studied Graphic Design in Florence for her Master's degree. But, she has been working for bus2alps for 2 years now, I think. She does Graphic Design for bus2alps during the week, and then works the weekend trips like Croatia, Interlaken, Amalfi Coast, etc. on the weekends! And, she gets paid for it all! How fun would that be?
